The family of Paul and Laura Mathia was blessed with seven children of which Loyola Mathia was the third. She attended Our Lady of Loretto School in Hempstead, New York and graduated from Hempstead High School. She received her B.A. from the College of Mount St. Joseph and her M.P.S. from Loyola University in Chicago.
Her life was dedicated to the Lord in a special manner when she followed the call of Christ to become a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati on Feb. 2, 1941. It was at that time that she was given her religious name, “Sister Mary Loyola Mathia”.
During her years of service, she taught in schools in Ohio, Michigan, Maryland and Florida. For eight years she worked as a supervisor/consultant to schools for the Cleveland Diocesan Office of Education.
In 1979, she came to Florida to serve the Lord at St. Benedict’s Church in Crystal River and St. Scholastica Church in Lecanto. She is a co-founder of Pope John Paul II Catholic School (formerly Central Catholic School of Citrus County). Since her retirement from the school in 1991, she has continued to serve as a RCIA Director, Adult Education Consultant and assisted in helping with the annulment process at St. Scholastica Church.
She now comes to St. Frances Cabrini Parish to assist those who wish to “regularize” their marriage in the Catholic Church. Her motto is “Serve the Lord in gladness of heart”.
